Working together with public schools to develop and fund solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to prevent emissions, reduce school operating costs, and enhance education
Solar Schools Canada | Les Écoles Solaires du Canada (SSC) is a non-profit start-up that assists public schools to develop and fund solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to prevent emissions, reduce school operating costs, and enhance education.
Solar Schools Canada is working with provincial public school boards, schools, government, business and community members to develop and fund solar PV systems in public schools across Nova Scotia.
The essence of a solar schools program is simple – install solar PV systems on schools, empowering those schools to generate their own electricity and create environmental, economic and educational benefits
Teachers can use the solar panels to instruct students in science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics (STEAM), energy & environment related subject matter.
Participating schools can reduce their carbon footprint by generating more of their electricity from clean, renewable sources.
Schools can use solar panels to generate more of their electricity independently, reducing operating costs, re-investing savings in students, teachers and schools.
How It Works
Solar Schools Canada raises the majority of funding to cover the system’s capital costs by appealing to business, government and community members and transfers or directs funds to participating schools.
Participating schools use funds to purchase a solar PV system.
Participating schools use solar PV system to generate electricity for direct consumption or to sell into the grid, producing a net transfer in funds from the electrical utility to participating schools over the system’s 25-year lifecycle.
Participating schools can re-invest cost savings/ revenue in students, teachers and educational resources.
Participating schools can employ the solar PV system as a learning tool to enhance education in STEAM and environment-related subject matter. Students apply that education to benefit their communities at the local, regional, national and global level.
Climate change is a collective problem demanding collective solutions.
Traditionally, our economies, energy and transportation systems have relied heavily on fossil fuels. Excessive reliance on these fuels over time has produced increasing levels of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere, threatening the stability of our climate, and the viability of our communities.
Solar Schools Canada seeks to target this problem directly by empowering businesses, government and community members to collaborate in funding school-based renewable energy installations, accelerating our society’s transition to clean, sustainable energy while generating meaningful social, economic and educational benefits.
